How to Create a Compensation Plan

Before you start creating Compensation Plans, you must have at least the following components ready:

  • Seller master in Master Data.

  • Compensation Condition Types

  • Header logic with seller picker and other inputs.

  • Calculation logic for calculating the Compensation Plan line items and Compensation Records.

  • Typically, also a workflow for Compensation Plan and Compensation Record approval.

To create a new Compensation Plan, take the following steps:

  1. Go to Sales Compensation > Compensation Plans.

  2. Click the New Compensation Plan button. If there are Compensation Type templates defined, select one from the list.
The document is automatically saved when it is created.

  3. Enter values to the required Header fields and select a Seller or Seller Group for whom this Plan is intended.
You can set which user groups can edit or view the Plan. It can be assigned in the User Group (View Details / Edit) fields.
User groups that are not permitted to view a Compensation Plan cannot see its values but can still see the Plan's name and other properties in the list of Compensation Plans. If you want to completely hide Compensation Plans for groups that are not entitled to see them, use the advanced property hideCompensationsBasedOnUserGroups.

  4. On the Items tab, add Compensation Plan line items (previously defined Compensation Condition Types). The items available from the drop-down list can be limited by a Compensation Condition Type filter logic.
You can bulk import items to the root folder using the Import items from clipboard button and pasting data in tabular format to the dialog window.

  5. Enter values for the Input Parameters of the line items.

  6. Click Recalculate to get the current values. Modify the Input Parameters if needed.

  7. Compensation Records are created when you add to the Plan an item whose assigned calculation logic generates Compensation Records.
You can monitor the progress of sales and forecasted commission in the saved Compensation Records.

  8. Once refined, click Submit to send the Compensation Plan for approval (provided that an approval workflow is defined and there is no error or a critical alert on any line). If enabled, you can add a comment.

  9. Once the Compensation Plan period is over, recalculate the final result and click Submit to send it for approval and payout.
