Chart Options

You can specify several chart options that improve the appearance and clarity of the chart. Note that not all options are available for all chart types.

Chart Options

The available options are:

  • Title – Chart title, which is displayed above the chart.

  • Subtitle  Subtitle will appear below the title of the chart.

  • Show legend – If checked, the legend of the chart is displayed.

  • Show tooltips – If checked, tooltips are displayed when the mouse cursor hovers over the chart.

  • Enable drill down – If checked, clicking a point in the chart opens a menu, where you can select the dimension you want to drill into (e.g., for a particular customer in all products). You can cancel the drill down by removing the dimension from the Drill-Down Dimension table in the chart settings.

  • Enable zoom – If checked, you can select a zoom-area by clicking and holding the left mouse button. The selected area will be displayed as a blue box. Only this area will be displayed upon releasing the mouse button.
Zoom is not available for pie and waterfall charts. Neither zoom nor drill-down zoom is available for histogram charts.

  • Comparison (Bar & Line and Detailed Time Series charts) – Specifies the comparison mode for two or more data series. There are three modes possible:

    • Grouped – Generates a grouped bar chart where values are compared by overall dimensions.

    • Stacked – Generates a stacked bar chart. The single elements are compared to the overall value and displayed as ratios.

    • Stacked % – Generates a stacked bar chart 100%. The single values are compared to the total value of all series and displayed as percentages.

  • Comparison (Box Plot) – Generates a grouped box plot chart where you can compare the same categories of two or more data series.

  • Comparison (Time Series)

    • Legacy comparison mode – Use this option if you want to align the data points in a multi-series chart without regard how the data match in terms of time. In this mode, the 1st data point in the first series is set against the 1st data point in the second series; and so on for the 2nd, 3rd data points etc.
This method of comparison is discouraged as gaps (dates for which no data is returned) may lead to misalignment of the compared data points across series.

    • Comparison – The regular comparison mode, which is mutually exclusive with the legacy mode. In this mode, a date range is set in the first series and an offset in the other series. The alignment of time periods is now strict: a time period in the first series will only match up to data points in another series for a time period with that exact offset. For example, when showing revenue by quarter for the year 2015 in series 1, then an offset of +1 in series 2 will lead to a comparison of 2015-Q1 to 2016-Q2, 2015-Q2 to 2016-Q2 etc.

  • Axis X Label and Axis Y Label – Axis label shown in the chart. If not specified, the variable name will be displayed.

  • Max data points – Specifies the maximum number of data points on the X axis. The counting of data points starts from the left. Depending on the sorting (descending, ascending or unsorted) the selection of data points changes.

  • Vertical layout – If multiple series are defined, the charts are displayed in vertical order.

  • X Min / Max Value and Y Min / Max Value – Set the range of data displayed on the axis.

  • Logarithmic X/Y/Z axis (Bar & Line, Bubble, Detailed Time Series, Scatter, Time Series, Time Series Scatter charts) – If checked, logarithmic scale will be used for that axis instead of the default linear scale. It is particularly useful for data with a large range of values.

  • Show Z-axis – You can optionally specify the Z axis. Enter an 'Axis Z Label' and 'Z Min / Max' values.

  • Color Axis Type (Heatmap chart) – Defines the coloring of the cells:

    • Default – Standard color code (blue) is used.

    • Interpolated – You can define percentage ranges and assign a color to them. In each range, the cells are painted in a gradient between the neighboring colors.

    • Ranged – You can define data ranges by entering values for 'From' and 'To' and the color in which cells within this range will be displayed.

  • Merge close data points (Scatter chart) – If enabled, close data points are clustered into one point in the chart.

  • Show full data set in grid (Scatter chart) – If enabled, the Data Set table shows the complete, non-clustered data set. This might cause slower performance if your data set is large.

Save Chart

You can save your chart with all its settings and load it later when you (or other users) need it:

  1. Click the Save Chart button to open the save dialog.

  2. The table at the top shows all public and your private charts.

  3. Select a folder in which the chart will be saved. You can change the folder later by hovering the mouse cursor over the chart's row in the overview table and using the Move to button.

  4. Enter a Name for the chart.

  5. Select the Visibility from the drop-down list. There are three options:

    • Private – The chart is visible only to the creator.

    • Published – The chart is visible to all, but only the creator can edit the chart. In addition, users with the Manage Saved Charts role can edit and delete published charts.

    • Open for all (view & edit) – The chart is visible to all and any user can edit.

  6. Optionally, you can add a description, which will be visible also in the My Charts section on the Home page

  7. Click Save Chart.

Only the settings of the chart are stored, not the underlying data. If the data changes, the chart will change accordingly.

Download Chart

There are two ways to download a chart:

  • Export XLS – Click this button on the top bar to download the chart data, the code definition of the chart and the chart image to an XLSX file. Asynchronous download is available for charts containing a large amount of data.

  • Download image – On the Chart tab, click the hamburger icon to download the chart image as a PNG, JPEG, PDF or SVG file.

Zoom

You can zoom the chart data in two ways:

  • Simple zoom – To select a zoom-area, click and hold the left mouse button. The selected area is displayed as a blue box. Only this area will be displayed upon releasing the mouse button. The maximum and minimum values of the X- and Y-axis are displayed on the Options tab. To reset the zoomed selection, click the Reset Zoom  icon.

  • Drill-down zoom – Click a record or point in the chart that you want to drill down to. From the context menu, select which dimension you want to drill down to (e.g., for a particular customer in all products). If necessary, repeat the process to continue drilling down into the data. The dimensions will be shown in the Data pane (the Drill-down Dimension table). You can go back to any drill-down level by selecting it in the Drill-Down Dimension table or remove a dimension by clicking the Delete icon. If the chart consists of several data series, the drill-down is performed only in the data series in which the selected data point is located.

Note:

  • Zoom is not available for histogram, waterfall and waterfall comparison charts. Only drill-down zoom is available for pie and heatmap charts and the Data Table.

  • Aggregation By, Axis X or Axis Y (where applicable) are not automatically restored to their previous settings. You must do it manually.

Exclude Dimensions

Any point (or bar) that you do not want to be displayed in the chart can be removed. Click on the point (bar) and select the Exclude option. All removed points will be listed in the Excluded Dimensions table in the chart definition from where you can return them to the chart by clicking the bin icon.

In the same way, you can exclude a dimension in the chart data table.

Synchronize Dimension Filters

You can synchronize customer, product and dimension filters between multiple series so that when you need to update the filter you can do it only once and in each of the series separately.

The synced global filter always applies to all the chart series, it cannot be applied only to some of them. Also, a necessary condition is that all the series have the same source Datamart.

  1. Set a Product, Customer or Dimension filter in any of the chart series.

  2. Click the Synchronize

    icon.
The filter moves to the Global Filters / Global Dimensions section at the top.

When you un-synchronize a filter, the value of the synchronized filter is applied to the individual series filters.

View Chart Definition

The View Expression option displays the code definition of the chart. It can be useful when adding a chart to a dashboard or logic.

If you need more help with the functions, use the API Documentation, especially the ChartBuilder section. If in doubt with these ChartBuilder methods, a good starting point is always to go to a chart in Pricefx, set the desired option and click the Add to Dashboard button to see the code.

Add Chart to Dashboard

If you want to include your chart in a dashboard, you can do so by clicking the 'Add to Dashboard' button.

After you click the button, a dialog opens. Select the Dashboard, to which the chart should be added and enter a label for the chart. Optionally, you can make further settings:

  • Show Generic Filter – Generic and Aggregation filters defined in the chart will be shown and available for editing in the dashboard.

  • Show Dim Filters – Dim filters defined in the chart will be shown in the dashboard. Users will only be able to change the filter value.

  • Allow adding and removing Dim Filters – Dim filters defined in the chart will be shown in the dashboard and users will be able to add and remove them.

  • Replace if exists – If a portlet with the entered label exists, it will be replaced by this one.

  • In the Expression Editor, you can adjust the chart definition, if required.

Change Chart Type

If you start to define a chart and realize that a different chart type would better suite your needs, you do not have to start again from scratch.

Click the Change Chart Type button and in the dialog that opens select a new type.

Only values that can be mapped to the options in the new chart are kept. Data not supported in the new chart will be lost and additional data might be required to render properly the new chart.

If you are not satisfied with the new chart type, you can switch back to the original one. Click the Change Chart Type button again and select the 'Previously Used' option – however this means that you will loose the settings made in this chart type. If you want to keep these settings (provided that they can be mapped to the options in the previous chart), select the previous chart type in the Similar/Other Types section.

Data Formatting

Click the Custom Formatting button to change the default data formatting and labels (shown in tooltips and in the data table). For details see Date, Time and Number Formatting.

Band By Option

The Band By option is similar to Group By: it is a second level of grouping in charts which applies colors to the points.

The Group By option means that one scatter/line point has the same value for the selected group-by field (e.g., if the field is Customer, then one point represents one customer).

If you group by Customer, and additionally band by Product, then every point is one combination of a Customer and a Product, so you get multiple points per customer, and multiple points per product. What is specific to Band By is that it drives the color of the point (color banding).
