How to Create Bubble Chart

Aim of this articleExplains how to create a Bubble chart, a chart type displaying three dimensions of data.

Steps:

  1. Go to Analytics > Data Analyzer > Bubble
  2. Enter the name of the data series in the Label field.
  3. Choose the data source from the Datamart drop-down list. If there is only one Datamart defined, this one will already be selected.
  4. (Optional) Enter a Currency. If not specified, the currency that has been selected as default when setting up the system will be used.
  5. You can set up the Generic filter (all dimensions, dates and values):
    1. Click the Create filter link, a new window will open.
    2. Specify the filter criteria. All fields defined in the Schema Editor can be used. Click OK to activate the filter.
(To deactivate the filter, click Edit filter and Reset. This deletes all filter criteria.)
(warning) Click the Refresh  icon at the bottom left on the Data Rows tab to activate the filter after any changes to the filter criteria.
  6. Set up filtering on master data if needed:
    • Product filter allows you to filter by all attributes from the product master data.
    • Customer filter allows you to filter by all attributes from the customer master data. Only the filtered data will be used in the analysis.

  7. You can set up a Dim filter:
    1. Select the filter dimension from the drop-down list.
    2. Click the Add  icon to add the filter. You can add up to twelve Dim filters.
  8. You can limit the range of the displayed data to a certain percentage, percentile or a number of data rows of any variable. The rest of the data will be displayed in the chart grouped as Other (except when Band By is used). If these uncategorized data distort the proportions of the whole chart, you can hide it using the Hide Other data option.
  9. Define the X Axis and Y Axis:
    1. Select the appropriate measurement for the axis X and axis Y from the drop-down list.
    2. Specify the value for the axis X and axis Y. The value can be defined as the total amount, per unit , percentage of the base value , contribution  or as a formula For details, see Common Chart Settings.
  10. Determine how the data is aggregated:
    1. Select the Aggregation By from the drop-down list. For example, when Customer is selected, each dot on the chart represents a customer.
    2. (Optional) You can activate the banding by using Band By.

(warning) If you select the same value as Aggregation By, the points are colored differently. If you choose a different value, the data is aggregated in addition to this value. For example, if you select customer class in the Band By field, each dot represents a combination of customer class (e.g., "A") and the customer (e.g., "Müller GmbH"). You can make the Band by color code displayed below the measures and in the chart by checking Show Band by Legend.

(warning) Only data fields marked as Dimension can be selected for aggregation and banding.
  11. Define the value for the bubble size:

    1. Choose the appropriate measurement for the Bubble Size from the drop-down list.
    2. Specify the value for the Bubble Size. Click the Sum icon. The value can be defined as the total amount, as a percentage of the base value , per unit  or as a formula . The base value for the calculation of 'percent value' and the 'per unit value' is defined and managed in the Schema Editor.

The size of the bubbles is normalized: the largest bubble is assigned the size 1, all other bubbles are displayed relative to this one.

  12. Determine the data formatting and labels:
    • You can change the label and the format by clicking the Dictionary  icon (see Date, Time and Number Formatting).
    • If a text is entered in the Label field, then this label will be shown. Otherwise the default value will be used.
  13. (Optional) You can have the Band by color code displayed below the measures by checking Show Band by Legend.

  14. (Optional) Click the Add Data Series  icon at the top of the Series 1 tab (details) to compare this series with other data series. There is no limit to the number of series that can be compared.

  15. Click the Refresh  icon to update the chart.

  16. (Optional) Create an Aggregation filter that allows you to filter the Datamart query results, i.e., to determine, which values will be shown in the chart.
  17. You can print or download the chart as image (*.png, *.jpeg), document (*.pdf) or vector image (*.svg) by clicking the Context  icon at the top right.
